Position Overview:
The Journalist / News Reporter is responsible for gathering, verifying, and reporting news stories in a timely, accurate, and engaging manner. This role involves researching and developing story ideas, conducting interviews, writing clear reports, and presenting news across multiple platforms. The position requires professionalism, strong ethical standards, and the ability to work under pressure while meeting tight deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
1. News Gathering & Research
• Identify and pursue newsworthy stories from various sources, including press releases, events, and social media.
• Conduct in-depth research and fact-checking to ensure accuracy and credibility.
• Build and maintain a strong network of reliable sources.
2. Reporting & Writing
• Write clear, concise, and compelling news stories for print, online, radio, or television.
• Translate complex information into simple, audience-friendly reports.
• Adapt stories to suit different media platforms.
3. Interviewing & Presentation
• Conduct interviews with experts, officials, and the public.
• Deliver live or recorded reports in a professional and engaging manner.
• Cover breaking news events promptly and accurately.
4. Editorial Collaboration
• Work with editors, producers, and content teams to shape story angles.
• Participate in editorial meetings by pitching and developing story ideas.
• Ensure all content aligns with editorial policies and broadcasting standards.
5. Multimedia & Technical Duties
• Use audio, video, and digital tools to capture and edit news material.
• File stories, scripts, and multimedia content within set deadlines.
6. Ethics & Professional Standards
• Uphold journalistic integrity by reporting fairly, impartially, and responsibly.
• Adhere to media laws, broadcasting regulations, and professional codes of conduct.
• Represent the organization with professionalism in public and official engagements.
Qualifications & Skills
· Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, Media Studies, or related field.
· Must be certified by the Ithibati Board
• Proven experience in reporting, writing, or broadcasting.
• Strong research, interviewing, and storytelling skills.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
• Familiarity with digital tools, social media, and multimedia production.
